Bishop's Annual Appeal 2023
Cathedral Restoration and World Youth Day
"Preserving Legacy; Building Tomorrow”
The legacy of our Catholic faith in the Diocese of Peterborough is rich. Our parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and beyond literally built our parishes. For generations, our prayers have seeped into the walls of our churches, our pews have given respite for weary souls, and Christ has laid upon our altars the banquet of eternal life.
Desiring to honour this legacy, Bishop Daniel Miehm has announced that the 2023 Bishop’s Appeal will support the physical restoration of the cathedral church and the diocesan delegation of young people attending World Youth Day in Lisbon this summer. Supporting the Bishop’s Appeal preserves our legacy and ensures it lives on for future generations.
CATHEDRAL RESTORATION
The first of the many phases is to secure all the upper stonework above the roof line. There are many chimneys and parapets above our heads including the stone cross above the front door. Even last year’s windstorm that ripped off the landmark cross from our steeple has not deterred the progress of this restoration project. Work has already begun on these items and this summer, the work on the roof replacement itself is beginning. The Mother Church of the Diocese is being restored and renewed with a bright future for us all. The original church construction dates from 1826, so we are coming up to the bicentennial of the Cathedral of St. Peter-in-Chains in 2026. With your help, we’ll be well on our way to celebrating this milestone in our diocesan family.
WORLD YOUTH DAY 2023
Nineteen young people from around the Diocese accompanied by priests involved with ministry to the youth and one seminarian are preparing to go to the World Youth Day being held this summer in Lisbon. World Youth Day 2023 is accompanied by two symbols: the pilgrim cross that was entrusted to the young people by Saint John Paul II and the icon of Our Lady Salus Populi Romani which is carried in procession to ward off dangers and misfortunes. The WYD pilgrims meet to pray for this pilgrimage and the graces they will receive. Our young people are looking forward to the opportunity to encounter other young Catholics from around the world and to bring that spirit and fervor for the faith back with them as they continue to serve in the diocese and beyond. Be part of supporting our young people through the Bishop’s Appeal!
