Sacred Heart College is mission-driven.

Sacred Heart of Peterborough embraces the Catholic tradition of teaching and learning that has influenced the historical origins of many universities and colleges worldwide. Our identity as a Catholic institution of higher learning means we encourage faculty and students to search for truth and goodness while embracing freedom of enquiry. As learners, teachers and researchers we enter with humility, collegiality and conviction into this dialogue of faith and reason which is centred in the work of St. Thomas Aquinas and found at the heart of a Catholic tradition of intellectual inquiry. Through this academic community, we offer our broader society a human endeavour which is hope-filled and a pathway of academic learning that is spiritual.

Sacred Heart College is faithful to its mission as a ministry of the Roman Catholic Church.

Professors at Sacred Heart College seek a mandatum from the bishop saying that their teaching will align with Church doctrine.

Motto

The motto for Sacred Heart College is Caritas et Veritas, ("Charity and Truth"). The quotes below from the Catechism of the Catholic Church about Charity and Truth inspire the motto.

1822 Charity is the theological virtue by which we love God above all things for his own sake, and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God.

2500 ... truth carries with it the joy and splendor of spiritual beauty. Truth is beautiful in itself. Truth in words, the rational expression of the knowledge of created and uncreated reality, is necessary to man, who is endowed with intellect. But truth can also find other complementary forms of human expression, above all when it is a matter of evoking what is beyond words: the depths of the human heart, the exaltations of the soul, the mystery of God.

Dr. Randy Boyagoda speaking at Sacred Heart College

Coat of Arms

The Coat of Arms for Sacred Heart College incorporates a number of components - the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus; a heart open to the world; the Cross of Our Lord; water and blood flowing from the side of Christ; hands embracing the Cross carrying it in the world as a sign of salvation; and the colours of red and gold are found in the Diocesan coat of arms. The motto and coat of arms reflect the Catholic tradition of higher learning which is the mission of Sacred Heart College to integrate Faith and Reason in the search for Truth.

Sacred Heart College brings knowledge together in unity.

A criterion for Catholic education is to impart a sense of the unity of knowledge. At Sacred Heart College, the search for a higher synthesis is kept alive as students integrate Faith and Reason in the search for Truth.

Sacred Heart College is linked globally.

Linked to a global church and to an international community of learning seeking to further God's Kingdom on earth through faithful leadership, apostolic work, prayer and stewardship of creation.

Sacred Heart College provides a fit for you.

The dignity of the human person is central to Catholic faith. Modern society has the tendency to reduce the individual to a function in the workforce. Education, however, is more than an acquisition of marketable skills. It is cultivation of the students' individual gifts as they integrate Faith and Reason in the search for Truth. A Catholic Liberal Arts Education helps the student to recognize the ways in which they are called to place their gifts at the service of the common good.

Sacred Heart College's mission is to inspire hope for a better future.

Blessed with professors, trustees, deans, and other university employees who are committed to nurturing not only the student's mind, but the whole student -- body, heart, and spirit - Sacred Heart College is committed to achieving excellence as a learning institution. The faith tradition at Sacred Heart College is securely founded on a commitment to excellence in learning and a faithful commitment to the God of all hope who calls people in every generation to Himself in love, hope, peace, and joy.
